Feeling Numb?
Do you ever wake up so happy and you have no clue why?
Yes, life is good, but there’s no tangible reason for your extremely great mood?
This was happening to me non stop.. until yesterday.
Yesterday, I woke up SO NUMB. I felt lifeless and dead to the world.
If you’re new here… you should know, yes I’m a yogi, but that doesn’t exempt me from real life experiences (and I’m not willing to fake it).
It just gives me a different perspective.
As a lover of yoga, it’s not just the poses that serve me, it’s the perspective. And here is the number one perspective shift I’ve made over the last few years that makes sadness, depression, and irritation less intense.
I dropped the shame.
I stopped feeling bad about feeling sad. I stopped getting mad about feeling bad for feeling sad. You catch my drift?
The spiral isn’t a result of the numbing mood, it’s when we make the mood mean something about us. When we start judging ourselves for having an experience.
So how do you get out of the shame cycle on your hardest days?
You feel it - the very emotion you are trying not to feel (for me, yesterday I allowed myself to just feel the numb, the boredom, the nothingness).
Then you drop the judgement. All the things you are making it mean about you.. let them go.
And then you let go of the attachment. In the moment we feel like it will last forever… it doesn’t. It’s more like a wave, it will come and go.
Finally, you keep going. Because just like the great days come and go, the challenging days come and go.
It was in yoga that this concept first started to actually make sense to me. This is the same thing we do with challenging poses. We feel it, we let go of judgement, we release attachment to the outcome, and we keep going.
Here’s a practice for when you just aren’t feeling your best, when you need a reminder to keep going and to love yourself unconditionally along the way.
And I will see you on the mat.
